Who we are

Sethack (pronounced sɛtɑːk) is a small company based on Bandar-e-Anzali port at Guilan province in northern of Iran. The company goals at founding moment was designing and developing software based on web and internet technologies and by following Free/Libre/Open source software principles.

We are trying to generate a new wave of contributions in Iran by making more interests and atoning people from normal users to senior developers and managers. We think that FLOSS is best option to propel Information Technology in a developing country like Iran.

What we do

We produce and develop softwares mostly by using web technologies. By being more transparent, we are active in following 3 categories:  

 

1. Designing social web

We think that in recent years the web and internet technologies are not making enough interests in Iran and at least between poeple from normal citizens to higher leaders and managers, and even there is some negative views and opinions about the total concept.

Sethack is trying to bringing both newer technologies and newer concepts that are practicable by spotting available potentials in Iran.

2. Providing SME solutions

Today, open source enterprise softwares are used all around the world. Sethack company is acting as a localizer party to choose the best solutions and providing support & further developments of these kinds of softwares in Iran.

3. Supporting FLOSS communities

There is no doubt that the soul of FLOSS movement is the communities of developers and users. If we disconnect the contributions of people from FLOSS there will be nothing to remain.

Sethack by following the FLOSS principles, trying to join the interests and establish a community of people in Iran that related somehow to Sethack products and services. A wide range of interests that can do anything to spread the FLOSS. However the idea of establishing a community is now a new concept in Iran and there is some primitive works by older volunteers.

The new key point in our act is using a more modern tools with more social basement than the previous contributions. Because we think some of current tools and software are a bit old fashioned. Currently we are projecting a new community software to achieve this goal.

How we work

The axis of achieving the goals in Sethack is based on 3 mothods:

1. Using simplicity, creating simplicity

Simplicity is the base of Sethack's works. We know that our works should be extremely clean and easy to use. Also we know that sometimes misunderstading this rule can mislead us and make our efforts to some unusable buzzwords.

Simplicity in Sethack's viewpoint including some defined standards that summarzied here:

  • Easiness in designing user interfaces and emphasising on its efficiency
  • Avoiding to use of "decorative" and unusable methods and buzzwords
  • Shortening the project as much as posibble by adding the features later one-by-one

 

2. Using the power of community

The place of community in sethack is high and stable. The most important effect of communities in Sethack are the user groups and associations that are using FLOSS products as primary way to communicate with each other. This can cause thrivings in Sethack activities. But what distinguishes Sethack in teamwork from others is the wide use of social networks and web based technologies instead of traditional methods and tools.

 

3. Using creative technologies

Before we start to establish our company we put a long time for choosing our base technology. Technology is the heart and the engine of Sethack company.

On the daily basis we are testing the newest trends in software technology and trying the most efficients to our goals. So because of this, most of the technologies we are using are unfamiliar in Iran and we try to introduce them to others.

Generally we use following technologies and tools in our company:

  • Python and C as programming languages to develop most of projects.
  • WSGI compatible web servers like Apache and nginx.
  • Django framework and some other pythonic MVC frameworks.
  • PostgreSQL and SQLite as database.
  • OpenObject and OpenERP to develope enterprise level products and services.

Sethack is a company that its co-founders are active in their specialized fields for more that a decade and the idea to establish Sethack was prepared in several years. In Sethack every piece of work is done by its own expert, For example the cofounders are just responsible to technical affairs and managers that joined later are responsible to strategic decisions.

 

2. Creativity

We know that the being creative is the key to success, so instead of imitating without thinking and trying to copy from others success stories, we decided to work on our own ideas to our own society.

3. Planning

Sethack even before its formation has been completed, had planned for future works. We was negotiating about our goals and aspect of our works with broad spectrum of people like university professors and students to software users and executive managers. Event investors and sponsors was selected before establishing the company.
